MERC recently developed flight maneuver recognition algorithms in MATLAB for both UH-1N and TH-1H helicopters. The algorithms determine the actual usage spectrum from historical flight data recorded by the Loads / Environment Spectra Survey (L/ESS) system. This usage spectrum is needed to establish the fatigue life of critical aircraft components. Multiple flight tests were performed at Andrews AFB to record scripted maneuvers during flight and then compared to the algorithm-predicted maneuvers. The flight tests helped to clarify how regimes should be defined and allowed for fine-tuning and validation of the algorithm.
