The two images show a crack emanating from a machined notch for a fatigue crack test. The arrows show the crack. The color enhanced photograph shows the same crack but with the strain field, in the principal y-direction, analysis shown.

MERC has the ability to measure the strain field in 3D (conventional 2D with out-of-plane bending) in a part or component. This is accomplished by applying a random paint pattern on the surface of the part under analysis. An image of the loaded part is compared to an image of the same part without load applied. Specialized software then measures the shift of the pattern between the two images and establishes the developed strain.
