The aging C-5 fleet is beginning to experience problems with part obsolescence and diminishing manufacturing sources of supply. The government has been notified that certain repair components for the C-5 are no longer available through the supply system.
MERC has accepted the task of redesigning the C-5 Hub Force Sensor (HFS), which is part of the C-5 Automatic Flight Control System.
This component has a high rate of failure and experiences problems with the strain gauge null-return which is crucial to the correct operation of the sensor system.
MERC will identify obsolete parts that make up the HFS and research historical and forecasted requirements data to determine the current shortage and projected shortage over the next 5 years.
MERC is performing design engineering and investigating options for correcting problems with identified obsolete parts. MERC will deliver HFS prototype systems and all supporting documentation for designed parts and assemblies.
